Truck Sales Trends
COVID-19 has been causing havoc across industries and for individual businesses since early 2020. So this year’s figures need to be considered in context when drawing any conclusions. As would be expected, trucks sales across all categories early in the year plummeted. However, according to figures published by the Truck Industry Council in July 2020, the sales figures for June 2020 were the ‘best monthly figures ever recorded’ in the country. June is traditionally a good month for sales due to end of financial year/tax time but June 2020 eclipsed all others. In fact, it was the best month for sales since June 2018.
This may have been partially due to the Government stimulus measures, especially the Instant Asset Write-Off. Analysing the total sales figures reveals that the heavy duty and medium duty categories were actually well down and it was the light duty truck category where the increased sales were significant. This may be a response to COVID-19 buying habits with more work for delivery services and other sectors requiring this size truck and the shutdowns of some operations using the larger category vehicles.
Sales by Brands
The Truck Industry Council release does not identify sales by brand so we had to dig deeper to source figures based on truck manufacturers. To place the most recent figures against a comparison level, in 2018 the top sellers in the heavy duty class were Kenworth, Volvo, Isuzu, Mack and Mercedes-Benz.
Jumping ahead to April 2020 and we find, based on year to date figures, the top sellers in the heavy duty market were Volvo, Kenworth, Isuzu, Scania and Mercedes-Benz. So not much of a change in brands just a juggling of top positions. Interest is greater further down the list with 9th placed DAF showing a 16.7% increase in sales and 7th placed UD posting an impressive 30.2% increase in sales over the previous period. Some industry experts surmise this increase is in response to the new generation releases from DAF and the uptake of the Quon from UD.
In the medium-duty classification Isuzu holds top spot, followed by Hino, Fuso, MAN and Iveco based on year to date figures to end of April 2020. While these are the leaders, sales in this category overall were down during the period.
As we said upfront, 2020 is a tricky year to judge sales but the trends are somewhat clear on which manufacturers are retaining popularity with the buyers. There are of course sometimes underlying reasons why one brand may sell better than another in any one period. Increased sales may reflect great deals being offered by dealers for a particular manufacturer in that period, an exciting new release or other specific issues. It may just reflect that those trucks are seen by many in the industry as great vehicles. Whatever the reasons you accept for the sales figures, statistics always need to be considered in context.
