Efficiency and safety are set to be bolstered in the New South Wales freight transport industry with the introduction of the Draft NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy.
The policy sets a new benchmark for heavy vehicle access and regulation across the state and is expected to have a profound impact on the modernisation of the freight industry.
By reducing the administrative burdens that have traditionally hindered freight operations, the new policy is designed to greatly streamline access for heavy vehicles across NSW.
Through simplifying the process for obtaining access permits, and aligning regulations more closely with industry needs - the changes are expected to save time and costs for operators, and enhance the reliability of goods being delivered across the state.
NatRoad chief executive Warren Clark said the policy recognised the importance of efficient goods movement.
“The freight industry stands at a pivotal watershed moment, where incremental changes are no longer enough,” Mr Clark said. “We need a comprehensive holistic approach, especially as we expect a 57.1 per cent increase in road freight requirements by 2040.”
A major focus of the policy is on improving road safety.
It aims to ensure heavy vehicles operate in a manner that minimises risks to all road users by incorporating better planning and upgrading of infrastructure to accommodate larger and more complex freight vehicles.
Other safety improvements include revising access protocols and implementing consistent regulations that uphold stringent safety standards.
Another key aspect of the reform is environmental sustainability, with the policy intended to contribute to reducing emissions through route optimisation and more efficient vehicle operations.
The Draft NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy was developed through in depth collaboration between industry stakeholders including freight operators, logistics companies, and community groups.
